Current Contracts
Core Drilling Specialists Ltd are now reaping the rewards of some very prestigious drilling and sawing contracts within the construction industry and the controlled demolition industry. For example, The Forth Road Bridge, where major sawing works was required to enable resurfacing of the Bridge and The Rosyth Royal Dockyard where Core Drilling Specialists Ltd coped with and successfully completed on schedule - the largest Diamond Core Drilling contract in Great Britain. The Rosyth contract included 600 No. 800mm diameter holes, 1.6 Metres deep at an angle of 26 degrees. These holes were to allow anchors to be fitted to the dock walls of the entrance loch as means of strengthening.
INFIRMARY STREET BATHS, EDINBURGH
Work is currently half way to completion at the Infirmary Street swimming baths whereby the client is refurbishing the existing building to create new flats. At the out set of the works the client was looking for a Demolition Company to remove all concrete from both pools within the building, however this was going to be harder than anticipated as the buildings main structure was in no condition to take the effects of vibrations from heavy breakers and therefore a concrete drilling specialist was required.
In February, the Main Contractor, Reywood Construction brought Core Drilling Specialists Ltd in to tackle the works. There was in excess of 900m3 of concrete to be removed from both pools which in some areas were up to 1.5m deep.
Due to the location of the works being in an old listed building, conventional methods could not be used. However, the combination of hi-tech specialised diamond cutting machinery together with the expertise of the Core Drilling Specialists Ltd operators proved to be the safest and quickest method of dealing with the removals.
Initially Core Drilling Specialists Ltd had to stitch drill an area of the pool to free it up from the adjoining walls, then using self drive drilling rigs we created a diamond pattern throughout the pool with 200mm diameter core bits. The drilling in the main pool consisted of coring over 500 holes, in order for us to prepare it for bursting out existing concrete base. Once Core Drilling Specialists Ltd had removed the base we were then faced with the problem of removing the pool wall without causing disturbance to the structural columns. This meant we had to cut around each side of the column which in some instances was 1m thick. This was a highly delicate situation which required a precise concrete cutting method, which was best suited to the Wite saw. After all the columns were segregated from the remaining sections of the pool walls Core Drilling Specialists Ltd used robolition to break out the concrete.
Robolition is using electric track machinery which is remote controlled and can fit through a standard door way and track up stairs etc. so is ideal for Refurbishment contracts and was highly effective in this instance also.
Once again, this demonstrates the benefits of diamond cutting techniques in a sensitive and restricted environment.
